In Japan, compulsory education covers a total of 9 years (6 years of elementary school and 3 years of junior high school). Children enter elementary school in the April following their 6^th birthday. After graduating from elementary school, students enter junior high school. There is no grade-skipping system in Japan during the compulsory education. The grade that a student enrolls will be determined by his/her age.

日本の義務教育は、小学校6年間、中学校3年間の9年間です。小学校へは満6歳を過ぎた最初の4月から入学することができ、卒業後に中学校へ進むことができます。日本の学校は年齢により学年が決められており、義務教育の期間は飛び級の制度はありません。

Children of foreign nationals are not obligated to attend Japanese schools. However, if they wish, they can enter public elementary or junior high schools. The opportunity is guaranteed to receive the same education as Japanese students have. Tuitions of public elementary and junior high schools are free of charge. However, parents are responsible for paying necessary expenses for attending school such as the fee of school lunch, school supplies and so on.

外国人のお子さんは、日本の学校への就学の義務はありませんが、公立の小学校・中学校への入学を希望する場合は、日本人の児童生徒と同様に無償で受け入れをしており、日本人と同一の教育を受ける機会を保障しています。公立の小中学校の授業料や教科書は無償ですが、その他の学用品費や給食費などは保護者の負担となります。

There are six elementary schools and three junior high schools in Togo. The school that a student should attend is determined by where the student lives.

東郷町には小学校が6校と中学校が3校あります。住所によって通学する学校が決められています。

If you are a foreign resident and wish to have your child attend a Japanese public elementary or junior high school, please refer to the following procedures;

外国籍のお子さんを持つ保護者の方で、東郷町の公立小中学校への入学を希望する場合は、次のとおり手続きをしてください。

Please submit a move-in notification for you and your children to the Residents Division.

Please come to the School Education Division for the application procedures to enroll a public school. (Please bring Residence Cards of you and your children.)

1. 住民課で保護者本人とお子さんの転入の手続きをしてください。
2. 学校教育課で入学に関する手続きをしてください。（保護者とお子さんの在留カードをお持ちください。）

Submit “a notification of transfer” issued by the School Education Division to the designated school your child attends for the admission procedures and ask further information.

学校教育課で発行された「就学異動通知書」を持って指定された学校へ行き、今後の学校生活について話し合いをしてください。

Please come to the School Education Division for the necessary procedures.

学校教育課で手続きをしてください。

Togo provides subsidies for necessary school expenses such as school items, school lunch fee and so on to parents who have elementary or junior high school children and is experiencing financial difficulties. The subsidies can be received if you are approved that you are having financial difficulties through investigating household income by the Board of Education. For further information, please contact to the School Education Division of the town hall.

東郷町では、小・中学校のお子さんがいる経済的にお困りの保護者に対し、学用品費や給食費など学校で必要な費用を援助する事業を実施しています。（所得等の調査を行い、教育委員会が経済的に困窮していると認めた世帯に対し援助を行っています。）援助を必要とされる方は学校教育課へご相談ください。
