What happens if a big earthquake strikes?

  • The heavy and unfixed furniture may move and fall down.
  • The doors could get stuck and lock you inside.
  • Splinters of glasses and rubbles could come falling down, walls and pillars could be destroyed.
  • Landslides and “seismic sea wave” (tunami) may occur.

Seismic intensity (SINDO)(震度)

The seismic intensity scale is a measure used in Japan to indicate the strength of the shock that you feel. It is measured in unites of “SINDO”. The seismic intensity (SINDO) runs from 0 to 7, and 7 is the strongest level of intensity.

What happens if earthquakes of the following seismic intensity (SINDO) occur?

Seismic intensity
Sindo” from
0 to 3
Occurs frequently in Japan, hanging objects such as lamps swing slightly
Sindo” from
4 to 5
Hanging objects swing violently, unfixed furniture moves and falls. Many people are considerably frightened and find it difficult to move.
Sindo” from
6 to 7
Most heavy and unfixed furniture moves and falls, occasionally, less earthquake-resistant buildings collapse. It is very difficult to keep standing and to move without crawling. Walls and windows will be broken.

When an Earthquake strikes?(地震が起こったら)

  1. Protect yourself and your family from injuries. Move to a safe place such as under a table and protect yourself especially your head with a cushion if available.
  2. Open the windows and doors to secure an escape route.
  3. When the earthquake settles down, put off the gas and turn off the breaker.
  4. Don’t rush away from home to outside. You might get injured by falling objects. To avoid getting injured by broken glasses, wear shoes even if inside a house or building.
  5. Obtain accurate information from TV or Radio.
  6. Don’t panic! Stay calm when you evacuate.
